The Senate leadership has proposed that the impeachment motion against Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza be probed by a committee of 11 senators.

Through the House Business Committee - the panel chaired by speaker Amason Kingi and which sets the agenda for the House- the leadership proposed an 11-member committee to hear the charges.

However, the House plenary must vote to either endorse the proposal or veto it to allow the trial to be done by a sitting of all the 67 Senators.

In a motion on Wednesday afternoon tabled by Majority Whip  Bonny Khalwale, the 11 members would include Senators Hillary Sigei, Abdul Haji, Wahome Wamainga, David Wafula, Gloria Orwoba, Karen Nyamu and Issa Juma.

Others are Eddy Oketch, Shakilla Abdalla, Betty Montet and Beatrice Akinyi.

If approved by the House, the 11 will investigate Mwangaza's proposed removal from office.

The committee will have 10 days to probe the matter and report on whether or not it finds the particulars of the allegations to have been substantiated.

Khalwale noted that this will be the third time that the Senate will be called upon to decide on the matter.

Senators are currently debating to decide whether or not to allow the 11 members to try Mwangaza.

If the motion is rejected, then the whole house will investigate the governor.
