A group of Kenyans arrested for urinating in the streets of the CBD had a gruelling time Tuesday cleaning the Nairobi city mortuary.

Several others were also ordered to clean Uhuru Park as others engaged in a cleanup of the city.

This is after they were arraigned in a Nairobi court where they faced various petty offence charges.

The cleanup of the morgue was supervised by the county city askaris and officers from the Health and Environment departments.

The group of 30 men was arrested Monday night in an intense crackdown on those urinating and littering the streets.

They were booked at the Central Police Station.

Nairobi County Environment Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria led the operation that was conducted by city inspectorate officers.

“We want to thank the magistrate for rendering the punishment and we want to remind those fond of breaking the law that we shall not relent on this,” Mosiria said.

He stressed the importance of protecting the environment saying that everyone should act responsibly and avoid littering.

“We have not suspended the law, we want this to be a lesson to the rest...we want to ensure Nairobi remains clean at all times,” he stated.

The county officials have been traversing the streets and estates targeting those involved in the crime.

Mosiria said they have recruited more personnel to help them in the operation.

The turn of events caught many offenders by surprise.

Parts of Nairobi's streets have become synonymous with littering, and street vendors were on the receiving end of the enforcement unit's efforts to check, if not stop, the habit altogether.

Peels from fruits and other litter made the vendors a target.

The county officials forced the street vendors to pick up their heaps of trash and discard them appropriately.
