Two children aged six and four were Tuesday killed in a fire incident in a village in Nyandarua.

Police said the incident happened at the Heni Dispensary staff quarters at about 7 pm.

The fire affected the first floor of the house where the staff members at the facility live.

The house was made of wood, police said.

The cause of the fire is yet to be established.

The mother of the children who is a nurse at the facility told police she had left the children in the house and went to a nearby shop to buy milk when the fire broke out.

She said on returning, she found the house on fire.

This prompted her and the neighbours to raise an alarm as they struggled to contain the spread and rescue the children in vain.

A fire engine joined the team fighting to contain the fire. It was then that the remains of the bodies of the two girls were discovered.

They were pupils at a local school.

According to police, the whole house was flattened by the fire whose cause is yet to be determined.

Police said the bodies were moved to the Engineer Hospital Mortuary pending autopsy and other investigations.

A team of experts including officials from Kenya Power were sent to the scene to boost the probe into the tragedy.

He said no injuries were reported in the incident.
