The Office of the Attorney General is set to establish a Strategic Litigation Division to enhance service delivery as the government’s principal legal advisor.

Attorney General Dorcas Oduor said the department will provide coordination and oversight as the government undertakes programmes geared towards improving national security and stimulating economic growth.

“We want to have a department that will bring together legal experts from different areas,” Oduor said.

Speaking when launching the Office of the AG Open Day at Sheria House in Nairobi, Oduor said the division will ensure her office advices the government in time.

“We also want to reduce instances where our cases are thrown out or the government is sued over its policies or action,” she said.

Present at the event were Solicitor General Shadrack Mose, Law Society of Kenya President Faith Odhiambo, and representatives from the Public Trustee, Registrar of Societies, Advocates Complaints Commission, Registrar of Marriages, Victim Protection Board, National Anti-Corruption Steering Committee, and National Legal Aid Services.

Odour said her office organised the open day to re-introduce itself to the Kenyan people.

“We want to explain to the public what the different departments in the office do and how we can partner with the people. We also want to know from the people areas we have performed well and where we need to make improvements,” she said.

She said the event also seeks to encourage dialogue on improving services.

Oduor noted that the Office of the Attorney General has 12 branches countrywide. She, however, said they are working to have a presence in all 47 counties.

Mose said the event would also be used to demonstrate the services the Office of Attorney General offers to the government and Kenyans at large.

“I think this is the very first time we are having such an event. We hope the event will encourage interaction of the office with the Kenyan people,” he said.
