A memorial service for the 21 victims of the Hillside Endarasha Academy fire tragedy will be held on Wednesday next week.

Acting regional commissioner in Nyeri Pius Murugu the disaster committee said the memorial service will be held at Mweiga Stadium.

Addressing a press conference, Murugu said some of the parents of the victims have indicated that they will bury their children on the same day.

“We want to finish the memorial service by 11 am so that we can release the bodies to respective parents and relatives,” he said.

“We will plan other things after the burials have taken place. A week after burial, we will look at modalities of reopening the school.”

He said the school should be reopened as soon as possible since pupils in other schools are learning while those at Endarasha are at home.

The acting regional commissioner noted that investigations are still ongoing.

“Taking statements from various people is still ongoing, and I think it is an exercise that will take time. We, however, want to thank the DCI for working very fast to release the bodies,” he added.

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga said members of the clergy who will lead the service will be strict with time.

“Service will begin at 8.30 am and end by 11.am. We want to limit, as much as possible, unnecessary talk,” he said.

He said the national and county governments have been working very closely to ensure all matters proceed smoothly.

The fire raged through the dormitory of the boarding school, killing boys who were sleeping.

More than 150 pupils were in the dormitory when it caught fire on September 5.
