A week ago, President William Ruto launched the Climate WorX Mtaani initiative that seeks to provide a source of employment to thousands of jobless Kenyans across the country.

The initiative which adopts the Kazi Kwa Vijana model will commence in Nairobi before being cascaded to the four other cities of Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, and Eldoret progressively.

In Nairobi, the youth will be engaged in activities which include rehabilitation of the 47km stretch of the Nairobi River Basin.

The project aims to transform the river into a valuable commercial and recreational hub, enhancing Nairobi’s stature as both Kenya’s capital and a global environmental leader, given its role as host to the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP).

“Nairobi, as the capital and host of UNEP, cannot afford to have its river in such a polluted state. The current condition of the Nairobi River cannot be the face of Kenya,” Ruto said.

At least 200, 000 people are going to be employed across the country in the whole programme.

Each county will have a minimum of 1, 500 beneficiaries.

How will it work?

Those selected will work on alternate weeks meaning they will be on duty for two weeks and then rest for another two weeks.

Each of the beneficiaries will be paid Sh500 per day while their supervisors who are also the youth will get Sh550.

Payments will be made through mobile money transfer every two weeks.

This means each of them will go home with Sh7,000 while the supervisors (Sh7,700) at the end of the work shift.

What are the activities to be undertaken?

Some of the key duties to be undertaken by the beneficiaries are on roads and infrastructure, environment and housing and urban development.

Under roads and infrastructure, they will be involved in road construction, greening, maintenance and clean-up of highways and roadways.

“This programme is a key part of our national climate action plan. Climate change is no longer a myth-it is an existential threat,” Ruto said in Korogocho during its launch.

The programme seeks to provide employment opportunities in line with the Kenya Kwanza administration's Bottom-up Economic Transformation (BETA).
