Sudan and the county government of Lamu have declared Port Sudan and Lamu Port as “twins and fraternal cities.”

The declaration sets the stage for cooperation in the fields of environment, culture, education, fisheries, health, and tourism.

They said the MoU seeks to foster relations and ties of friendship, cooperation and mutual understanding.

“The parties shall encourage cooperation in the above-mentioned fields through exchanging delegations and experiences, and organisation of exhibitions, festivals, seminars and conferences to be held in both cities, as well as becoming acquainted with each other's cultural backgrounds,” they said in a joint statement.

Sudanese ambassador to Kenya, Kamal Gubara, and Lamu County Secretary signed as witnesses.

The MoU came into force on Wednesday and will remain valid for five years.

“It shall be automatically renewed for similar periods, unless one of the parties notifies, in writing, the other about its intention to terminate it six months before the expiration date, through diplomatic channels,” the MoU added.

The agreement was signed at the Sudanese embassy in Nairobi.
