Skyward Express Airline has announced a temporary suspension of all its flights to and from Kakamega.

In a notice to its passengers, the airline said the suspension will take effect September 30.

It has cited safety concerns over the deteriorating runway at Kakamega Airstrip.

The airstrip, it says, no longer meets its safety standards.

"The safety of our passengers and crew is paramount," the notice dated September 28 reads adding those affected will assisted with alternative arrangements.

"Our customer service will be reaching out to all passengers with bookings on the affected flights to assist with alternative arrangements," the airline said.

It has further apologised for the inconvenience while promising to resume it's flights once the runway issue is addressed.

"We are hopeful that runway issues will be resolved swiftly. We look forward to welcoming you onboard again soon," it states.

Those with inquiries have been urged to contact the call centre on 0709786000 or email at [email protected]

The move has since attracted the attention of leaders from the region.

"I can't believe my good intentions for Kakamega airport have become a pipe dream," Kakamega Senator Bony Khalwale said.

Mumia East MP Peter Salasya, however, assured the residents that the runway issue will be addressed this coming week.

He stated that he had reached out to the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) Managing Director and the top management and who have promised to repair it.

The airport, he said, has been of great benefit to the county.

Shinyalu MP Fred Ikana added his voice saying he will engage Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir over the matter and KAA to find a lasting solution.

He said the stoppage of the flights dents efforts to revive air transport in Kakamega and western region.
