Former President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday held a virtual meeting with the United Nations Envoy. Uhuru doubles up as the facilitator of the EAC-led Nairobi Peace Process.
The virtual meeting was in preparation for the UN Special Envoy for the Great Lakes region Huang Xia’s upcoming briefing to the UN Security Council on the Great Lakes region.
“I had a virtual meeting today with H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta, former President of Kenya and Facilitator of the EAC-led Nairobi Peace Process,” Xia said in a statement on X.
He said the discussion focused on the next steps of the Nairobi Process as well as the way forward to ensure closer coordination between the Nairobi and Luanda Processes.
Uhuru is the facilitator of the EAC-led Nairobi process on the restoration of peace and stability in the Eastern DRC.
In April, Uhuru raised concern that the situation remained of grave concern, particularly in the humanitarian and security aspects.
"The issue of trust remains fundamental to resolving the challenge of security in the eastern DRC. Therefore, it was clear that the Nairobi Process would have to intensify its confidence-building actions," he said.
In May, however, he expressed hope that the ongoing process would bring peace to the region.
The process has led to the deployment of the East African Community Regional Force (EACRF) to stabilise the war-torn eastern DRC.
The troops from Kenya, Burundi, Uganda, and South Sudan are currently in the country to help secure areas from which the M23 has withdrawn.
Among the areas vacated are Sake-Mshaki-Neenero and Kilolirwe in North Kivu on the Western Front. Uhuru was mandated with handling all communications with the M23 rebels.
The leaders, who had met on June 1, to review the situation in the DRC, also commended the former Head of State for his role in the peace process.
