Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has thrown his hopes on the Members of Parliament as they prepare to vote over his impeachment motion.
Gachagua said he respects and trusts the House will make the right decision.
The DP was addressing MPs when he appeared before Parliament to respond to allegations tabled on his impeachment motion.
“Look, reflect, and apply your conscience and make the right decision,” he said.
“I have tremendous respect for the National Assembly and your ability and capacity to make the right decision.”
The DP defended his move to speak on the allegations a day before his appearance before the House. Gachagua addressed the nation in a press interview at his official residence in Karen on Monday night.
Earlier, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula had cautioned Gachagua against speaking about matters that are before Parliament. Wetang’ula said that the DP should have refrained from commenting on matters before the House.
“It is spilt milk, water under the bridge. You said what you said. But it is only fair that being an immediate former member of this House, you should exercise your conscience to hold as to whether this is a theatre of the absurd or the Honourable National Assembly of the Republic of Kenya,” he said.
Gachagua said that Kenyans needed to hear his side of the story.
“My address last night was not in any way meant to disrespect the House, despite you having ruled that the matter should not be taken out of the House, it was being discussed in every TV and meeting across the country, and Kenyans did not have a chance to hear my side of the story. I decided since the accusations against me were everywhere in the country, most of those who voted for me and President William Ruto deserved to know my story,” he said.
The DP was invited to the National Assembly to defend himself against 11 charges levelled against him by Kibwezi West MP, Mwengi Mutuse.
The accusations include fomenting ethnic animosity, committing economic crimes, undermining the President, publicly attacking a judge, threatening the acting Kemsa CEO, acting in insubordination of the President, and alleged acquisition of wealth amounting to Sh5.2 billion.
Gachagua has denied all the charges and vowed to fight the ouster end to the bitter end, including using the courts.
