Employers in Kenya have been urged to invest in mental health clinics for the welfare of their employees.

Health CS Deborah Barasa said mental health is a crucial aspect of well-being and should be prioritised in workplaces.

The call comes as the joins the world to mark World Mental Health Day on October 10, 2024.

The CS presided over the ceremony at Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital.

She said there is an urgent need for organizations to address mental health issues. “I urge employers to invest in mental health clinics, implement these guidelines and include mental wellness programmes in school curricula,” the CS said.

“Together, we can create healthier workplaces and a society that values mental well-being. Let’s take action for mental health.”

In response to the mental health challenges, CS Barasa said that the Ministry of Health has introduced Kenya’s first National Guidelines on Workplace Mental Wellness.

The move, she said, will promote mental well-being and establish support systems for affected employees.

This year’s theme is the ‘Time to Prioritise Mental Health in the Workplace’.

The CS said the theme is relevant as approximately 3.7 million workers in Kenya are estimated to suffer from mental health disorders.

“This situation has significant economic implications, contributing to a loss of 0.6 per cent of our nation’s GDP due to decreased productivity,” she said.

CS Barasa acknowledged the contributions of the Ministry of Labour PS’ representative, Barasa Wafula and other partners.
