Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has expressed prestige at the drop in fuel prices announced Monday by the Energy Regulatory Authority.

Epra said the maximum retail prices for imported refined petroleum products for the October-November cycle had dropped drastically.

In statement, the authority said Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene had decreased by Sh8.18, Sh3.54, and Shs.6.93 per litre respectively, effective October 15, 2024 to November 14, 2024.

“Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene will now retail at Sh180.66, Sh168.06, and Sh151.39 respectively in Nairobi starting midnight,” Epra said in a dispatch.

The price drop comes exactly two months since new Energy and Petroleum CS Opiyo Wandayi took over from his predecessor Davis Chirchir on August 14.

Wandayi is one of four CSs in the Kenya Kwanza government who were brought on board by President William Ruto from the Opposition ODM after a series of Gen Z-led streets protests piled pressure on his administration with demonstrators demanding better governance and improved cost of living.

Current African Union Commission chairmanship candidate Raila Odinga, then at the helm of the Opposition wing, said that Ruto asked him to ‘donate’ some of ODM’s experts, a request to which he obliged.

In her reaction to the fuel price drop, Wanga, an ODM member, said the experts appear to be doing their job.

“Breaking News: Epra reduces petrol prices by Sh8.18, diesel by Sh3.54 and kerosene by Sh6.93. Our experts seem to be getting it right,” she said on X hours after Epra made the announcement.

Speaking on Saturday, July 27, during the burial of lawyer Evans Oruenjo in Siaya, Raila Odinga said Ruto requested him to appoint some experts from the opposition to help him run the country.

"I told Ruto to wait for a pre-agreement but he said he was in a hurry to have a new Cabinet in place,” Raila said.

"I had told him if you feel you are in a fix, just make your things work. He requested that he had a government to run and so he had an urgent need to consolidate a Cabinet."

Ruto on July 24 nominated Mbadi to the Treasury docket, Wandayi as the Energy Cabinet Secretary, Joho as the new Mining Cabinet Secretary and Oparanya the new MSMEs and Cooperatives Development CS.
