Religious leaders have called on Kenyans to remain peaceful regardless of the outcome of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's impeachment trial.

The clerics in a statement on Wednesday acknowledged the constitutional provision for the impeachment of a deputy president but noted that it was a unique occurrence in Kenya’s history and needed to be handled with utmost care.

They called on the Senate to ensure that justice is not only done but seen to be done to the embattled DP in recognising that the process will set a precedence in the country.

“It is our heartfelt wish that the Members of Parliament exercised similar energy and resources on matters that are priority to the lives of the people of Kenya as they have in debating the impeachment,” the leaders said.

The religious leaders are drawn from the National Council of Churches of Kenya, the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) and the Supreme Council of Kenya (Supkem) Muslims.

Gachagua is on the verge of being removed from office on 11 allegations, including undermining the President.

He has denied the charges before the Senate.

The House will on Thursday vote to determine whether evidence adduced by the National Assembly and mover of the motion, Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, meets the threshold for his impeachment.

On October 8, MPs from the political divide voted 281 to 44 to approve the proposed ouster of the second-in-command.

The clerics spoke during a convention at the Ufungamano House in Nairobi to review the state of the nation.

Those present included NCCK chairman Rev Dr Elias Agola, Catholic Justice and Peace Department chairman, Rt Rev Simon Peter Kamomoe and Supkem deputy chairman Sheikh Muhdhar Ahmed.
