The Nyamira County assembly has called on interested Kenyans to apply for the position of Speaker.
The move comes after Speaker Enock Okero was removed from office by way of impeachment.
After a rigorous debate by the MCAs at the assembly about the motion for the speaker’s impeachment in the county assembly on Thursday morning, 23 MCAs voted to support the impeachment motion meeting the two-third rule threshold to oust the speaker from office.
The motion of impeachment was moved by Kiabonyoru ward MCA Vincent Benecha and seconded by Bomwagamo ward MCA Julius Nyankana.
"It is notified for the information of the general public
that pursuant to Section 11(1)(c) of the County Government Act, 2012 (Rev.
2022) and Standing Order No. 60 of the Nyamira County Assembly Standing Orders,
the Speaker of Nyamira County Assembly, Enock Ogori Okaro has been
removed from office by way of impeachment. The Office of the Speaker is hereby
declared vacant," read an advert from the office of the clerk.
"Article 178 of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010 as read
together with Section 9 A (1) of the County Government Act, 2012 provides that
each County Assembly shall have a Speaker who shall be elected by that County
Assembly in accordance with the Standing Orders, from among persons who are
qualified to be elected as members of County Assembly but are not such members."
Interested candidates can collect the nomination papers (in-person by interested
persons) from the Office of the Clerk of the Nyamira County Assembly between
8.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. from Friday, 25 October 2024 to Sunday, October 27, 2024.
The nomination papers shall be returned to the Office of the Clerk by Tuesday, October 29, 2024, at 8.00 a.m.
Interested persons should return the completed nomination form together with clearance from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission evidencing the fact that the candidate is qualified to be elected as a Member of the County Assembly under Article 193 of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010 and the candidate is not such a member.
Other documents include a copy of his or her National Identity Card/Passport; two recent coloured passport photographs, a copy of curriculum vitae (CV) Copies of the candidate's academic certificates and other relevant documents in accordance with Article 193 of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010.
"Further to the above, a person who wishes to participate in
the election must be nominated by two (2) Members of the Nyamira County
Assembly," read the notice.
"Shortlisted candidates shall be notified of the day and time
for election of the Speaker."
