Supreme Court judges led by Chief Justice Martha Koome during Moot Court competition on November 2, 2024
Law students from 17 universities across the country are today (Saturday) participating in the finals of the Moot Court competition.
The competition is part of the celebrations organised to celebrate 12 years of Kenya's Supreme Court.
It is being held before the judges of the court led by Chief Justice Martha Koome with finalists having the opportunity to give their final submissions.
They analyse a problem, research the relevant law, prepare written submissions, and present oral arguments.
The bench consisting of Justices Mohammed Ibrahim, Smokin Wanjala, Isaac Lenaola and William Ouko will later retreat to decide the winner.
This is the first time law students are appearing before the Supreme Court.
"The purpose is to mentor and inspire the next generation of advocates," Judiciary said in a statement.
Speaking during the launch, Koome said the competition is an important opportunity for participants and law schools to reflect on the rich jurisprudence that the Supreme Court has developed in the last decade.
Participation in the competition is aimed at providing law students with a unique opportunity to deepen their understanding of the Supreme Court’s rich jurisprudence.
"This competition is an excellent platform for students to be mentored by judges and other legal members of the Supreme Court. Every year, I admit many young lawyers to the bar," she stated.
Koome revealed that in November she will admit 821 Advocates are set to the bar.
This brings the total of lawyers admitted to the bar this year, to more than 2,000.
