Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo will on Monday, November 4, launch the Chief's Climate Action Day at Ondiri Wetlands.
This event marks a turning point in Kenya’s environmental journey, symbolizing a profound commitment to tackling climate change through community-led tree-planting initiatives.
Under the visionary leadership of President William Ruto, the ambitious goal to plant 15 billion trees by 2032 has set in motion a nationwide movement, aiming to raise the country’s tree cover from 12 per cent to a significant 30 per cent.
President William Ruto recently led a nationwide tree-planting campaign in Kiambicho Forest in Maragùa, Mùrang’a County.
Planting and growing trees, the president pointed out, is also a solution that will mitigate the effects of climate change, which include devastating droughts and destructive floods.
In October 2023, King Charles III hailed President William Ruto for his tree-planting initiative.
The King said that he admired President Ruto for his efforts to ensure Kenya plants 15 billion trees to combat climate.
"Having been planting trees for most of my life, I thought I was doing rather well, but your ambition for planting 15 billion trees makes me admire your efforts," he said.
Ruto has continuously urged Kenyans to support his agenda of planting 15 billion trees by 2032.
He said that his administration will ensure the agenda is fully implemented.
The aggressive tree-planting campaign is aimed at increasing the country's e forest cover by five billion trees.
The government has also set a national target of planting 500 million trees across the country by December 25.
