Police officers have reported that a man, alleged to have stolen a phone from an unidentified individual in the Umoja One area, was lynched by a mob on Sunday.
The 19-year-old suspect, identified as James Macharia, attempted to flee on a motorcycle, but around 50 riders pursued him.
Macharia and his rider were traveling from Kayole towards Ruai.
Police said upon reaching the Ruai underpass, they were intercepted by the boda boda riders and the public who subjected the duo to mob justice.
Macharia was beaten to death on the spot while the rider took cover in a nearby culvert, police said. The motorcycle was completely burnt.
Police said the rider was removed from his hideout and subjected to serious beating. He was rescued by police officers who responded.
He sustained serious injuries on the entire body and was rushed to Mama Lucy Kibaki hospital for treatment while the deceased was taken to the city mortuary awaiting autopsy.
