Homa Bay County Assembly Speaker Julius Gaya has resigned.
Gaya resigned as the County Assembly Speaker of Homa Bay before the planned impeachment motion against him by MCAs.
Gaya resigned after there were some speculations that MCAs had planned to impeach him from the position.
It is however still not clear why Gaya quit the office through resigning.
However, the county assembly Majority Leader Richard Ogindo said many MCAs had made up their mind to remove Gaya from the office.
Ogindo said the resignation was the best action that the speaker could do.
“Gaya has done the right thing by resigning because only one MCA had his support. The majority of MCAs didn’t want him,” Ogindo said.
Homa Bay County Assembly has 54 members.
It is reported that 53 MCAs had appended their signatures to remove him.
The County Assembly Deputy Speaker Okings Okomo told MCAs that Gaya sent his registration letter to the office of the clerk before leaving the assembly compound.
“I wish to remind you about the provisions of Standing Order number 14 (a) 1 which provides that a speaker or deputy speaker who intends to resign from office shall submit a letter of resignation addressed to the clerk,” Okomo said.
Okomo said he received the resignation letter of the speaker before he presented it to the plenary.
“I notify this House of the resignation of Gaya pursuant to provisions of Standing order number 14 (a) 3,” he said.
Okomo declared the office of the Speaker at the County Assembly vacant.
Last month, Gaya alongside former acting clerk Anne Ager was summoned to record statements by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
EACC is undertaking investigations at the County Assembly.
Gaya was required to provide the original letter he used for applying for the post of County Assembly Speaker.
Ager resigned two weeks ago, after appearing before the anti-graft agency.
