President William Ruto on Thursday last week cancelled all
deals government had entered or was planning to sign with Adani Group, citing
new financial mismanagement information linking the Indian conglomerate
The decision was applauded by Kenyans, with MPs according the
President a standing ovation hours after news broke that billionaire owner of
the Adani Group Gautam Adani had been indicted in the US for fraud and
bribery.
On October 11, the Energy Ministry signed a Sh96 billion
agreement to operate and maintain the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company
Limited (KETRACO) transmission lines and substations for 30 years.
The High Court in Nairobi issued conservatory orders on
October 25, 2024, stopping the implementation of the deal.
The Adani Group was closing in on securing another Sh240
billion deal to manage the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) for
30 years.
From the look of things, the government was determined to
seal the deal despite Adani’s indictment in the US over fraud and growing public
disapproval that grew louder during the June-July Gen Z led protests.
During the demonstrations, protesters attempted to march to JKIA to express disapproval over plans to lease the airport.
Word on the street at
that time was that the privately initiated proposal (PIP) was in fact a
disguise to sell the airport, a claim the government denied amid mounting calls
for President Ruto to step down.
During the march, a young protester was caught on video expressing anger at the idea of the government selling the airport, something he said was ridiculous considering JKIA is a critical state asset.
"Ameuza airport, anawezaje uza airport. Hatutaki, sahi
tunaelekea airport,” he’s heard saying.
(He has sold the airport, how can he sell the airport? Right
now we are headed to the airport).
The video went viral and excited many on social media and
when Ruto cancelled the deal last Thursday, many said the young man was ahead
of his time.
On Monday, comedian-cum activist Eric Omondi posted on his X
feed a video of the young man taking what he said was his first ever flight to
JKIA.
"Our brother today boarded a plane and landed at JKIA for the very first time ever. We celebrate and appreciate him. We enrolled him at a TVET. He wants to be a mechanic,” Omondi captioned the video.
