Police in Thika are investigating an incident in which a 76-year-old woman suddenly collapsed and died while seeking services at a public office on Monday afternoon.
According to reports, the woman was in the company of other clients at the waiting bay, waiting for the officer who was reportedly away on lunch break.
Sources in the office allege that the officer had told the clients to wait until afternoon when she would be back from lunch to serve them.
"She was at the waiting bay in the company of other clients waiting for an officer over lunch hour when we heard screams. We rushed there and were informed that she had collapsed, then we informed the police," they said.
According to Thika West Sub County Police Commander Lawrence Muchangi, they received reports that a woman had suddenly collapsed while seeking services at the public office, and they dispatched officers.
"We received a report from the office that a client had collapsed in their offices while seeking services, and I dispatched a few officers to the building to ascertain the report, which was true," he said.
He added that upon arrival, the officers quickly rushed the woman to the hospital for emergency treatment, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
He added that the police informed the family of her demise and are now waiting for postmortem results to determine the exact cause of death.
“This is a tragic incident, and we are working to establish the circumstances surrounding her sudden collapse and death,” said Thika West Police Commander.
This is not the first time someone has collapsed and died at a government office in Thika. Three years ago, an officer at the Sub County Treasury office collapsed and died while in the washrooms.
