Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has said that the Affordable Housing project has created over Sh4 billion worth of jobs in the Jua Kali sector.
Speaking after chairing the status and appraisal briefing on the Affordable Housing Programme, Kindiki said this has also enhanced growth in the manufacture of construction materials locally.
Kindiki noted that the housing project is ongoing in at least 45 counties across the country and has so far provided jobs for over 200,000 Kenyans.
“100 housing projects in 45 counties that will yield 135,515 units are in various stages of completion, providing job opportunities for more than 200,000 people as part of the Government’s job creation initiative," Kindiki said.
“The ongoing housing projects have availed more than Ksh.4B worth of work for the Jua Kali sector and accelerated growth in the manufacturing of cement, steel and other construction materials,” he said.
The DP said that the Affordable Housing Programme is a priority for the government and is aimed at facilitating citizens access to decent, safe and affordable housing.
Kindiki added that the annual demand for houses in the country is high, compared to what is available in the market yearly.
He said this is why the Kenya Kwanza administration is focused on implementing the programme that includes the social housing project to cater for low-income earners.
He further noted that some of these houses will be ready from allocation early next year.
“Currently, the national annual demand for housing stands at 250,000 units against an annual market production of 50,000 units," he said.
“From January 2025, some of the housing projects will be ready for commissioning, allocation and occupation by the new homeowners,” Kindiki added.
Kindiki said that so far, about 550,000 Kenyans have registered for home ownership through the Boma Yangu platform and the allocation process will begin once the housing projects are complete.
The status and appraisal briefing was held at the DP’s official residence in Karen on Wednesday.
The meeting was attended by Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome, Principal Secretaries; Nixon Korir (Lands), Susan Mang’eni (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development), among other senior government officials.
