Former Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has been nominated as the Agriculture Cabinet Secretary.

The nomination was made by President William Ruto.

The changes were announced in a circular signed by the Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Felix Koskei on Thursday.

Kagwe is set to replace the current CS Andrew Karanja who has been nominated as Kenya’s Ambassador to Brazil.

"His Excellency the President has today made nominations, re-assignments and appointments to the senior ranks of the Executive. The nominations effected are in regard to individuals to serve the Nation in its foremost policy organ - Cabinet - as well as in the Foreign Service. The Head of State and Government's Executive Action re-aligns Ministries, State Departments, and Kenya's Foreign Service to optimize performance and enhance service delivery as set out in the Administration's revitalized plan under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA)," read a circular signed by the Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Felix Koskei on Thursday

Kagwe served during Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration and was famous during the COVID-19 period.

His experience in public service and insights on the politics of the country having previously served as a senator are viewed as crucial in navigating the challenges facing the Interior Ministry.

His management of the health crisis garnered both national and international recognition, positioning him as a prominent figure in Kenyan politics.

Additionally, during President Mwai Kibaki’s administration, Kagwe played a crucial role in liberalising the communication sector further enhancing his credentials for a potential return to Cabinet.

Kagwe’s nomination would not only bring an experienced politician into the fold but could also help bridge gaps between different political factions, particularly in the wake of recent upheavals within the government.
