At least three people died after consuming illicit alcohol in Lanet in Bahati, Nakuru County.

Police said they feared more people might be affected by the drink amid the search for the source of the drink.

Nakuru County Teaching and Referral Hospital Medical Superintendent James Waweru confirmed that two people aged 37 and 41 died while they were receiving treatment at the facility.

One person was brought to the hospital morgue on Saturday morning.

Officials said it remains unclear where the illicit brew was sourced from as one of the deceased persons brought the liquor and shared it with his friends.

This is as they celebrated ahead of the festivities.

"They reportedly complained of stomach pains, loss of vision and general fatigue,” a local official said.

Police said they are investigating the incident. The investigation team is seeking to establish the source of the drink as part of efforts to stop further deaths.

The team combed the area on Saturday as they searched for the drinks. Such cases on illicit brew killing and leaving others immobilized are common.

Multi-agency teams have been staging operations to address the menace in several urban areas.

This has seen thousands of liters of the drinks destroyed amid resistance from some manufacturers.

The interior Ministry said they have been persistent operations targeting the brewers which has reduced such cases.

Inspector General of police Douglas Kanja said they have intensified the war on illicit brews and drugs abuse and remind bar owners to comply with operation hours.

He revealed he had recalled all police officers who are on Leave to resume duty with immediate effect to enhance the operations.

“We call upon the general public to remain vigilant even as you celebrate, and report any crime or suspicious activities, to the nearest police station or through the police hotline numbers 999, 112, 911, and #FichuakwaDCI 0800 722 203.”
