The Ministry of Health, through the State Department of Public Health and Professional Standards, is calling on all Kenyans to embrace safety measures that will safeguard their health and well-being during this festive season.
In a press release by the Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni, urged Kenyans to remain vigilant against potential risks to ensure a safe and joyous season for everyone as they connect with loved ones.
To maintain food safety and hygiene, the PS has advised Kenyans to observe strict cleanliness when preparing meals. They should wash hands frequently with soap and running water and ensure food is cooked thoroughly and served while it is still hot. Leftovers should be promptly refrigerated and reheated well before consumption.
The PS further advised Kenyans to avoid eating meat that has not been inspected by certified officers or one that has been sourced from dead animals.
Raw and cooked foods should be kept separately to prevent contamination, and clean, treated, or boiled water should be used for cooking and drinking.
At any hosted events, the public is advised to ensure proper sanitary facilities, including hand wash stations and latrines, are available and that emergency contacts can also be quickly accessed.
While encouraging everyone to stay hydrated and protect themselves from extreme weather conditions to prevent the spread of diseases, the Ministry is also advising those with medical conditions such as diabetes, HIV, or Tuberculosis to carry adequate medicines to last throughout the holiday period.
The Ministry recognizes that mental health and wellness are also important during festivities, and it therefore advises the public to balance their societal commitment to avoid stress.
“Ensure you get sufficient rest, with at least eight hours of sleep daily. Stay physically active and avoid excessive alcohol consumption or smoking. Respect other people’s choices regarding alcohol and stay connected with family and friends to nurture emotional well-being,” reads part of the statement.
The Ministry also emphasized on road safety and stated that safe roads are a shared responsibility for all; thus, the designated drivers should observe traffic rules, maintain safe speed, and prioritize the safety of other road users.
Those planning activities near water bodies have been advised to always supervise children near pools, beaches, or rivers and to avoid swimming alone or under the influence of alcohol.
The Ministry has affirmed that it remains committed to promoting safety and health during this festive season, and for more information and assistance, Kenyans can reach the Ministry through 0729471414 or 0732353535 or via the helpline 719.
