Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has asked Gen Zs and Millennials to continue calling out the government and holding it accountable.
Speaking in Kakamega on Sunday, Gachagua said there is a need for them to continue exposing the ills in the society.
“Let me tell our young people, the Gen Zs and the Millennials, what you are doing in social media is very good but it’s not enough,” he said.
“These young people because they have shown patriotism and commitment to liberate our country through the power of the online space, I want to plead with them to go a step further to register as voters.”
Gachagua said the young generation is the hope that the country has on the road to integrity, stating that they will “sort out the political problems of this country once and for all”.
He however said it was not enough to just talk on the X space, but to take a step further and be registered voters to change the country’s leadership.
He reiterated his appeal to the youth to fully complete their activism on social media by bringing in change and making it a reality through the ballot in 2027.
“Much as they are doing a very good job on social media, on the X space and Tiktok, that is only a certain percentage but the real job to liberate this country and bring good governance will take place in August 2027,” he said.
“And the young people who are the majority have a very huge responsibility to sort out this country for us and for themselves because they are the future”.
The youths have been using the X and Tiktok space to call for accountability from the country’s leadership, since before the June 2024 anti-government protests.
Their presence on social media forced President William Ruto to hold a space meeting on X, to have deliberations on the country’s direction with the youth.
The Gen Z movement also saw the change of cabinet, the shelving of the Finance Bill 2024, the formation of a broad-based government and a meeting with former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
