The hashtag #MondayIsMonday has taken X (formerly Twitter) by storm, amassing over 61,000 posts since it began trending on Sunday, December 29 evening.

This is as citizens voiced their frustrations over recent abduction cases.

The movement reflects growing public anticipation for nationwide protests on Monday, December 30, 2024, as citizens demand the release of abducted individuals.

Notices posted in X state that those demonstrating should carry with them placards, bottles of water and handkerchiefs.

The protests do not have a set location as the notices read “occupy everywhere”.

The country has been plagued by abductions, with at least seven young people taken since December 17, 2024.

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights said a total of 82 persons have been abducted since June, with 29 yet to be traced to date.

The Commission said in the last three months, there have been 13 reported cases.

One of those abducted in December has since been found.

The six who are still missing are Steve Mbisi from Machakos, Billy Mwangi of Embu, Peter Muteti of Nairobi, Bernard Kavuli of Nairobi, Rony Kiplang’at of Kiambu and Gideon Kibet alias Kibet Bull from Nairobi.

Speaking at the Raila Odinga Stadium on Friday, President William Ruto said that he will end the abductions to restore public trust in national security.

He further urged parents to lead from the front in mentoring and protecting their children to uphold peace in the nation

“We all want to walk together. I want to urge all parents that our children are a blessing from God, and you should take care of them and the government will do our part,” he said.

“All that has been said about abduction will be dealt with. We will end it so that our youth can live in peace and have faith in security agencies.”

On “Monday is Monday”, here is what Kenyans on X have say:

“From Monday morning, 30th December 2024 it is 55 million citizens against 2000 government officials and abductors. I am blind, but I know how to lead you against injustice. every citizen please join me on the streets as we take our country back. I am going to stand with all those who have been abducted and their families#EndAbductionsKE,” former Presidential aspirant Rueben Kigame said.

“The way I'm waiting for Monday!! Let’s go out and defend our dignity as Kenyans,” Wanjira Wanjiru said.

“The streets are calling. Hasira inazidi kupanda. Monday will be a day to remember. Enough is enough,” Cornelius Ronoh said.

"The People Shall, underline the word SHALL. Monday is Monday," another user said.
