As Kenyans take to the streets to protest against the ongoing abductions, police have been deployed to disperse the demonstrators.
Videos shared on X reveal anti-riot police mounted on horses patrolling Aga Khan Way in Nairobi, where protesters have gathered.
Among the protesters was Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah, who, along with others, locked arms in solidarity to resist arrest.
At around 1 pm, police lobbed tear gas at the ‘End Abductions’ protesters, causing several journalists and demonstrators to scramble for safety. The protesters regrouped shortly after and continued with the demonstrations.
At 1:45 pm, Omtatah and other protesters clung to a heavy-duty metal chain in a bid to block police from arresting them.
Minutes later, Omtatah and a group of protesters were picked up by police officers from Nairobi Central Business District and taken to Central Police Station for processing.
The protesters have been demanding to know the whereabouts of six men who were abducted between December 17 and 25, 2024.
Among those abducted are Gideon Kibet, Ronny Kiplagat, Steve Kavingo Mbisi, Billy Mwangi, Peter Muteti, Bernard Kavuli and Kelvin Muthoni.
The protest came as the Director of Public Prosecutions Mulele Ingonga ordered a probe and directed the police to inform him of the status of investigations into claims of abductions and forced disappearances by January 1, 2025.
