CJ Koome mourns passing of Nakuru Principal Kadhi Kunyuk

Koome on Tuesday said Kunyuk passed away after a prolonged illness.

Chief Justice Martha Koome has announced the passing of Hon. John Tito Kunyuk, Principal Kadhi at the Nakuru Law Courts.

Koome said Kunyuk passed on after a prolonged illness.

In a message of condolence, Justice Koome expressed her deep sorrow, describing Kunyuk as a dedicated judicial officer whose career was marked by commitment to justice, scholarship, and community service.

“I wish to extend my deepest condolences to the family, relatives, friends, and colleagues of Kunyuk during this difficult time,” he said.

Koome stated that Kunyuk began his career with the Judiciary in January 2013 when he was appointed Resident Kadhi and posted to the Kajiado Law Courts.

Over the years, he served with unwavering dedication at various stations, including Isiolo, Kakuma, Kisumu and Nakuru Law Courts.

Koome said Kunyuk consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to the principles of justice.

“Beyond his judicial work, Kunyuk was widely recognized as an avid reader and researcher with a passion for scholarly pursuits,” she added.

The CJ noted that Kunyuk’s academic endeavors and publications focused on Islamic Family Law and its application in contemporary Kenyan society, and the history and jurisprudence of the Kadhis' Court in Kenya.

He also researched the history and literature of his Turkana community.

Kunyuk’s dedication to his community was evident in his efforts to champion various community and charity programmes in his home county of Turkana.

“Throughout his career, Kunyuk exemplified the virtues of diligence, fairness, and professionalism in all his judicial duties,” Koome stated.

She added that Kunyuk’s passing is a profound loss not only to his family but also to the Judiciary and the communities he faithfully served.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones as we mourn the loss of a dedicated judicial officer whose legacy of service will continue to inspire us all,” Koome said.

“May his soul rest in eternal peace. Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajioon”.
