On Tuesday, Zuckerberg announced that Meta will replace its third-party fact-checking system with community notes, similar to X. The changes will start in the US.
"We're going to get back to our roots and focus on reducing mistakes, simplifying our policies, and restoring free expression on our platforms," he said.
He said fact-checkers have been politically biased and have destroyed more trust than they have created, especially in the US.
Zuckerberg added that they are also simplifying content policies and eliminating restrictions on topics like immigration or gender and shifting enforcement policies on lower-severity violations.
“I want to make sure that people can share their beliefs and experiences on our platforms,” he said.
The Meta CEO said they will also have a new approach to policy enforcement to reduce the mistakes that account for the vast majority of censorship.
He explained that Meta used to have filters that scan for any policy violation, noting that they will now be focused on tackling illegal and high-severity violations.
“For lower severity violations we are going to rely on someone reporting an issue before we take action,” he said.
Meta is also bringing back civil content and move trust and safety, and content moderation teams out of California to Texas.
“As we work to promote free expression, I think that it will help us build trust to do this work in places where there is less concern about the bias of our teams.
Finally, Zuckerberg said they will promote free expression worldwide.
In this, the CEO said, they will work with US President-elect Donald Trump to push back on governments around the world that are going after American companies and pushing to censor more.
