The Confederation of African Football has postponed the 2024 CHAN tournament to August 2025, citing infrastructural hiccups.
The tournament, which was initially slated to start on February 1, will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
CAF president Patrice Motsepe acknowledged that all host nations had made commendable progress in the construction and upgrading of stadia, training fields, hotels, hospitals, and other infrastructure and facilities for the hosting of a successful tournament, but a few elements needed more time to finalise.
“The CAF Technical and Infrastructure experts, some of whom have been based in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, have advised CAF that more time is required to ensure that the infrastructure and facilities, are at the levels necessary for hosting a successful Total Energies African Nations Championship (CHAN) Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda 2024,” Motsepe said.
“The exact date in August 2025 of the commencement of the Total Energies African Nations Championship (CHAN) Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda 2024 will be announced by CAF in due course,” CAF president Patrice Motsepe said.
This is the second time the CHAN games have been postponed.
CHAN 2024 was initially set for September 2024 but was pushed to between February 1 and 28, 2025, due to lack of match venues that meet standards in some of the host countries, including Kenya.
The cancellation comes just a day before CAF conducts the draw of the championships in Nairobi from 8pm tommorow
