The United States embassy has announced that it will remain closed on Monday, January 20, 2025.
In a statement, the embassy said it would remain closed to mark Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
“The embassy will be closed on Monday, January 20, 2025, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day,” the statement reads.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday in the United States observed on the third Monday of January each year.
King was the chief spokesperson for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement, which protested racial discrimination in federal and state law and civil society.
The day celebrates the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who was a prominent leader in the American civil rights movement.
The holiday honours his contributions to the struggle for racial equality, and social justice, and his commitment to nonviolent protest.
The day coincides with the inauguration of President-Elect Donald Trump for a second term at the White House.
This is the second time the embassy will be closing in barely two weeks.
On January 9, it also closed in remembrance of former US President James Carter.
“The US Embassy in Nairobi will be closed on Thursday, January 9, 2025, in remembrance of former US President James Carter. All routine appointments for that day have been rescheduled via e-mail. The embassy will be open on Friday, January 10, 2025.”
