Ven Canon Jonathan Kabiru has been elected as the third Bishop of the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK), Diocese of Nairobi.
Kabiru was on Saturday elected by the Electoral College, consisting of 23 delegates, converged at ACK St Stephen's Cathedral on Jogoo Road.
The delegates were drawn from various congregations within the diocese, who came together to vote and select a suitable candidate to lead them spiritually and administratively.
The Electoral College confirmed that Kabiru secured victory in the first round of voting.
He was vying for the position against two other candidates, Ven Canon Joshua Omungo and Canon Dr Sammy Wainaina.
The bishop-elect is set to succeed Bishop Joel Waweru.
Kabiru’s leadership is expected to serve as a beacon of moral guidance and his integrity will be instrumental in addressing the challenges facing this urban population in Nairobi City.
Before his election, he served as an archdeacon within the ACK.
As an archdeacon, Kabiru oversaw various parishes and clergy within his jurisdiction.
He also provided guidance, support and oversight to ensure that the church’s activities aligned with its mission and values.
In a statement on X, ACK gave thanks to God for the successful conclusion of the Nairobi Diocese election process even as it congratulated the bishop-elect.
“Congratulations to the Bishop-Elect Ven Canon Jonathan Kabiru. We pray for God’s guidance, wisdom, and favor upon him as he prepares to shepherd His flock,” the statement read.
Following his victory, Kenyans took to congratulate him as they prayed God’s guidance over him.
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja wished him well as he takes the ropes as the head of the diocese.
“Congratulations to our new ACK Nairobi Diocese Bishop, Ven Canon Jonathan Kabiru, on your election today. May God guide you as you lead the Nairobi congregation,” the governor said.
