Kenyans on X have taken to comment on the recent directive by Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, to landlords to repaint their buildings and install security lighting, within 90 days.

As some appeared to criticise the directive, a section of Kenyans expressed hope for a cleaner and more beautiful city.

A user, Rom said, “That will look amazing, to be honest, the city will shine brighter at night”.

“Sounds like a much-needed change! A fresh look and better security can make a big difference in the city's vibe. Excited to see the improvements!” technologist Mutuse said.

“Waongeze hata the year the building was opened. For historical purposes,” another user stated.

Another user called for the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) to repair the damaged roads in the city county, to complement Sakaja’s efforts.

“While this happens KURA should also recarpet the roads, they are dilapidated.”

Others expressed their thoughts on the same, with a user going by Jasper saying, “Perhaps we should examine who owns the streets because the security lighting is pathetic. Let's start there.”

A user backed up the plan but cautioned that some landmarks should remain as they are.

Let them paint but Afya center should not be repainted hiyo wasiguze.”

“Na wasiguze Afya Centre otherwise nitapotea, niko western coming to Nairobi,” another user said.

Several users wondered what the move would achieve.

“How does this relate to the development of Nairobi?

One Ms Kanyi asked, “Very nice governor. Can we also demand a good drainage system in CBD within 90 days?

On Sunday while speaking at the Church of Christ Africa in Buruburu, Sakaja announced new measures aimed at restoring order and enhancing the city’s appearance.

He lamented over the neglected state of some buildings with faded paint, stating that a fresh coat of paint would significantly improve the city’s aesthetics.

“As part of our commitment to cleaning and upgrading the city, landlords within the CBD will be required to repaint their buildings and install security lighting. A notice will be issued this week, giving them 90 days to comply,” Sakaja stated.

“This proposal is a step in the right direction. It would improve the city’s overall image while attracting more visitors.”
