The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has invited Kenyans to provide feedback on draft guidelines for the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the media.

In a statement on Monday, MCK CEO David Omwoyo announced that the council has developed guidelines addressing the use of AI, data, and social media to ensure their ethical and appropriate integration into professional journalism in Kenya.

Omwoyo emphasised that public participation in policy-making is mandated by the constitution.

“The Council invites members of the public, stakeholders, and all interested parties to submit their views, comments, and recommendations on the draft guidelines. This will inform their review and ensure the guidelines reflect a wide range of perspectives and meet the needs of the industry,” he said.

The CEO shared that the council has developed four key documents on the guidelines including A Data Governance Guide for Media Practice in Kenya, A Media Handbook for Reporting on Artificial Intelligence in Kenya, A Media Guide on the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Kenya and A Guide on the Use of Social Media and the Internet for Media Practice in Kenya.

Omwoyo directed that written submissions be sent to the Council via email at [email protected] by January 26, 2025.

He highlighted the importance of adopting standards to preserve journalistic integrity and maintain public trust as AI, data, and social media tools continue to transform the field of journalism.

“The guidelines aim to support the media in navigating these technological advancements while safeguarding professionalism and ethics,” he said.

“These guidelines represent a proactive approach to addressing the evolving challenges and opportunities presented by technological advancements in journalism.”

The guidelines are available for review on the Media Council of Kenya’s website at the following link: bit.ly/4hdoDVa.

Omwoyo reaffirmed the Media Council of Kenya’s commitment to empowering journalists and media practitioners to uphold the highest standards of professionalism while embracing technological innovation.
