Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has asked Kenyans seeking a second chance to better their high school grades to register for the 2025 July KCSE series.

The CS said the upcoming exams, the first of their kind in Kenya’s examination history, will offer past candidates who did not do well in KCSE a golden opportunity to enhance their grades.

“The good thing with the KCSE July series is that they give a significant second chance to those who didn’t make it and also reduce pressure on the November exams that hitherto have been a do-or-die,’’ Ogamba told the Star.

Ogamba said those seeking to sit the exams will be considered for courses of their choice in institutions of higher learning if they manage minimum requirements.

Candidates who never met the cut-off for the country's most sought courses will have an opportunity to enrol for them should they score the necessary cluster points in the July tests.

Ogamba spoke after the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) released registration guidelines for the July KCSE series.

Thousands of high school leavers who failed to make the cut-off to university are expected to register for the tests as they seek a second chance to pursue careers of their choice.

Those targeted include adult learners who will not be in formal high schools but would want to sit the exams to better their grades.

Another category targeted is young learners who are within the school-going age bracket but want to sit the tests away from learning institutions and without going to class as private candidates.

The other cluster comprises repeaters and those who were unable to do KCSE last year because of varied reasons.

All those seeking to sit the July KCSE series will be required to pay Sh7,200 for all the papers, according to KNEC.

KNEC said the registration portal for the July series shall be closed on Friday, February 21, 2025, and there will be no provision for late registration of candidates once the portal is closed.

"The registration period for the 2025 KCSE examination —July series will commence on Monday, January 27, and end on Friday, February 21, 2025,'' KNEC said.

The fees shall be paid at the point of registration through E-Citizen, as per the details provided in the KNEC registration platform,' KNEC said on Saturday.

"Please note that fee payment is mandatory for successful registration," KNEC said.

KNEC said the money will be paid by repeaters wishing to either sit full or partial papers and private candidates.

"All repeaters and private candidates must register for the July series and not the November KCSE examination series,'' Knec said in a statement.

Any candidate wishing to repeat (full repeaters or partial repeaters) will be allowed regardless of the year they sat their KCSE examination, as long as there is proof of having registered for KCSE examinations previously.

The registration process will be coordinated and conducted at County headquarters through the offices of County Directors of Education (CDEs) on the KNEC registration portal.

For Nairobi candidates, the registration will be coordinated and conducted at the KNEC Headquarters at New Mitihani House, South C.

"Candidates wishing to register for the July series are therefore expected to present themselves at their respective County headquarters within the stipulated period to complete the registration process,'' KNEC said.
