Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has opened up on why he was impeached from government.

Speaking on Tuesday, Gachagua said that it was because he disagreed with President William Ruto on many of the policies he brought.

The former DP said that while at first, he believed in Ruto’s vision the people he talked to said otherwise.

He said that when he raised these concerns to President William Ruto things started going south between them.

“I started telling the president when I talked to the people they didn’t like what we were doing. If it is affordable housing the President said that it was good and I supported him because I thought it was good and I believed him until he introduced the housing levy when other Kenyans had loans and were building their own houses.

“It came to Finance Bill 2024, and the University funding and I told the president I have talked to parents they don’t like it and he said if we have agreed to do something as a government we do it,” Gachagua said in an interview with Vuuka, Sulwe and Mulembe Radio stations.

He, however, noted that he raised these concerns privately during meetings with Ruto and nothing was coming out of it.

He then decided to go public and that is when the decision to have him impeached came about.

“I used to talk to the president in private but it got to a point where I started talking in public and that's why they decided to impeach me. We were not getting along with the President.”

Gachagua said that at no point did he feel or say he was equal to President William Ruto because he was his principal assistant.

He said what he refused to do was join a team that only agreed with him without telling the President the truth.

“I never said I was equal to the President the problem was everyone was agreeing to everything he was saying. I refused.”
