Vivo Energy Kenya managing director Peter Murungi has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the highest fuel quality standards across its more than 320 Shell-branded retail networks.

This comes after online reports and videos casting doubts on the firm’s fuel quality surfaced online early this week.

During a media briefing session at a Shell Station in Nairobi, Murungi outlined the company's robust quality assurance mechanisms while emphasizing Shell V-Power's consistent compliance with international fuel standards.

" For the last 100 years, we have offered our customers premium products in the market; the V-Power fuel brand meets the RON Standard ratings of 95. Our commitment to quality isn't just a promise – it's backed by substantial investment in infrastructure, technology, and human expertise," Murungi said.

He added that the company has implemented systems to ensure product quality at different levels.

He explained that when the product is loaded at the site, specifications are checked, coupled with inspections at an ISO-approved lab in Mombasa and Shell labs in Nairobi and Mombasa.

"We conduct daily tests to check parameters such as colour and water to maintain our fuel quality. Our systems provide instantaneous quality metrics and enable immediate response to any variations in fuel parameters," Murungi said.

"Shell V-Power helps improve vehicle engine performance for an unmatched driving experience."

On Thursday, the government defended the quality of fuel in the country, saying that rigorous testing and certification processes are conducted on petroleum products before being released into the market.

A joint statement by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) and the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) reassured the public of the quality of petroleum fuels in the country.

The agencies asserted that despite recent online reports and videos casting doubts on fuel quality, their confirmatory tests have shown that fuel from various retail stations across the country meets the required standards.

“In light of the recent reports and videos circulating on social media, we have conducted extensive confirmatory tests on fuel samples from various petroleum retail stations, including those specifically mentioned in the reports,” read the statement in part.

“We are pleased to report that the results of these tests confirm that the fuel at all sampled stations meets the recommended Research Octane Number (RON) ratings as stipulated by Kenyan Standards.”
