Kisumu county is witnessing a transformative wave of development, with several infrastructure projects promising to elevate the region’s economy currently underway.

The projects, which range from the building of modern service centres to major transport and infrastructure developments, are expected to create a profound impact.

They include the Ojolla Huduma Centre, Kisian ESP Market, a new airport traffic control tower, and the critical Mamboleo-Miwani-Chemelil-Muhoroni-Kipsitet Road project.

The initiatives are not only meant to improve local commerce but boost transport efficiency. They also align with the objectives of the ongoing Nyanza Investment Conference.

The conference seeks to attract investment and promote regional integration in Nyanza counties.

The National Government Development Regional Implementation Coordination Committee led by Nyanza regional commissioner Flora Mworoa and government delivery unit secretariat regional head Silvance Osele expressed satisfaction with the progress of the projects.

Mworia said the Ojolla Huduma Centre will address delays in accessing government services.

She said the Kisian ESP market, which cost Sh53 million, seeks to provide local traders and farmers with a modern and organised space to conduct business.

“This project will not only contribute to Kisumu’s growing economy but also help solve challenges faced by small businesses, such as inadequate market facilities and poor access to urban consumers,” Mworoa said.

The market, which is among three ESP markets being built in Kisumu, promises to unlock new avenues for trade, facilitating economic growth and creating employment opportunities.

The Kisumu Airport traffic control tower, which cost Sh314 million, will be completed in May. Mworia said the new control tower will improve air traffic management at the Kisumu International Airport, increasing its capacity and efficiency.

“As the gateway to western Kenya, Kisumu’s international airport is a crucial asset for tourism, trade and investment,” she said.

Mworia said the upgraded infrastructure will not only enhance safety and reliability of air travel but also position Kisumu as a more attractive destination for international flights.

The Mamboleo-Miwani-Chemelil-Muhoroni-Kipsitet Road project, which spans over 63 km, is expected to have a profound impact on the county’s connectivity and transportation efficiency.

Osele said once completed, the road will ease congestion, reduce travel time and provide better access to markets for farmers and traders.

“The project faced some delays due to payment issues. Construction has resumed after intervention by the national government, and work is now progressing steadily,” he said.

The road will significantly improve the flow of goods and services across Kisumu and neighbouring counties, boosting trade and fostering regional integration, Osele said.

He said the government is banking on the infrastructure projects to woo investors to Kisumu.
