The Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has been urged to take immediate and concrete measures to ensure the safety of patients and staff following an incident where a patient was reportedly stabbed to death on Thursday night.
Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris on Saturday took to her X handle to call for accountability and transparency from KNH, explaining that the repeated lapses in security are a matter of serious concern.
“This tragic event mirrors a similar incident 10 years ago, when Cosmas Mutunga, 42, was found brutally stabbed in Ward 8C. Disturbingly, in both cases, the hospital’s CCTV was reportedly non-functional at the time of the incidents," she said.
“The recent reports in the media are deeply troubling and raise serious concerns about public safety”, Passaris added.
Gilbert Kinyua, 40, was found dead in his bed with his throat slashed, police and hospital officials said.
The 40-year-old father of two had been admitted to the hospital since December 2024. Police visited the scene and determined there was an intruder.
They also established the CCTV cameras were not working at the time of the incident. KNH said they are deeply saddened to confirm the incident involving the tragic death of a patient.
KNH acting CEO Dr. William Sigilai said they are investigating the incident. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the patient's family during this difficult time.
The hospital is working closely with law enforcement authorities and has launched an internal investigation to determine the facts surrounding this incident.”
“Kenyatta National Hospital remains committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all. The safety and well-being of our patients, staff, and visitors are our utmost priority,” he said in a statement.
