A three-year-old girl who disappeared last Sunday only for
her body to be found dumped in a swamp in Maragua on Monday was sexually assaulted before
being clobbered to death.
A post mortem conducted at Murang’a County Mortuary on
Thursday confirmed that the girl, Eliza Wamaitha, had sustained injuries on her external
genitalia
The girl disappeared at around 6.30 pm on Sunday, while playing with
her friends outside her mother’s rental building in Maragua town.
After spending the night looking for her unsuccessfully, her
mother Florence Wanjiku received that a child’s body had been found on the
banks of the Githanja River, about 400 metres from her home.
The distraught mother went to the scene only to find her
daughter dumped in a swamp with her body half-dressed.
“She had her sweater and skirt on, but her underwear and
stockings that she had were missing,” she said.
Further, Wanjiku noted that her legs and arms had been
broken and that her genitals were bleeding.
The postmortem further revealed that the girl had suffered
subdural haematoma, a serious condition where blood collects between the brain
and the skull caused by a head injury.
As such, the cause of her death was ruled as blunt force
trauma and a sample taken from her private parts for DNA analysis.
She said she had no suspicions on who may have perpetrated
the heinous act that shook her neighborhood, with residents who included
traders and boda boda riders demanding quick action from the police.
Residents said Maragua has been grappling with insecurity
and appealed to the police to intensify patrols.
The county police commander, Benjamin Kimwele, said they are
following up on the issue and expressed confidence that suspects will soon be
apprehended.
“Some people close to the family visited my office to
discuss the issue, and I assured them that we will do everything we can to
establish the person behind the crime.”.
Kimwele appealed to members of the community to volunteer
information on the matter, saying the area has an influx of idlers.
“The postmortem revealed that the girl was murdered, and there was also interference with her genitals, but it was not defilement that killed her. We have some leads and may arrest somebody,” Kimwele said.
