A G3 rifle, allegedly connected to the murder of former Kabete MP George Muchai, was recovered from the home of one of the accused persons currently on trial, the court has heard.

Senior Sergeant Francis Ole Singila testified before Judge Kanyi Kimondo that they also found two rounds of ammunition at the doorstep of Jane Wanjiru, the fifth accused person.

The court heard that the rounds were hidden under a concrete stone.

Singila, whose task was to track down the whereabouts of the accused, stated that they had also seized an array of items: a gunpin, two balaclavas, and a pair of pliers.

The ammunition, he added, was stored in a black polythene bag.

When asked if the recovered items, particularly the balaclavas, were tested for DNA, the witness (Singila) indicated that he was unaware, as this fell under the duties of the investigating officer.

Defence lawyer Stephen Ogalo inquired, “Do you know if any of these exhibits were examined for fingerprints?” Singila admitted he was not aware of any fingerprint analysis, despite being the one to recover the gunpin.

He clarified that, at the time, the dusting of fingerprints on the pin appeared to be insignificant because members of the public were reportedly handling it like a coin.

Those on trial over Muchai's murder are Eric Isabwa alias chairman, Raphael Kimani alias Kim Butcher, Mustapha Kimani alias Musto, Stephen Astiva alias Chokore, Jane Wanjiru alias Shiro, Margaret Njeri and Simon Wambugu.

They have however denied the charges.

The accused persons according to the witness were arrested following a lead and tracking of their phone numbers.

The hearing proceeds in April.
