Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has dismissed Amukowa Anangwe from his position
as Chairperson of the University of Nairobi (UoN) Council, effective Friday,
February 21, 2025.
The decision was officially communicated through a Gazette Notice on Friday, citing the powers vested in the Cabinet Secretary by the Universities Act, 2012, in conjunction with the Interpretation and General Provisions Act.
"In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 36 (1) (a) of the Universities Act, 2012, as read together with Section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Education revokes the appointment of Amukowa Anangwe (Prof.) as Chairperson of the Council of the University of Nairobi, with effect from February 21, 2025," the notice read.
Anangwe’s dismissal comes just days after UoN lecturers threatened to go on strike.
The lecturers demanded the dissolution of the council as part of reforms aimed at improving efficiency and effectiveness.
They called on the government to address their concerns immediately failing to which they will paralyse learning at the institution.
