Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Performance and Delivery Management Eliud Owalo has stated that the government has an ambitious plan to transform Nyanza’s economy.

He emphasised the government’s commitment to addressing the region's long-standing political and economic neglect.

“Nyanza has been left behind in the past, but this time, under President William Ruto, we are determined to change that,” Owalo said.

Speaking on Friday during the burial of Prof Bethwell Ogot, Owalo said that under President Ruto’s leadership, the government has identified 10 key projects to transform the region.

Among these initiatives is the Lake Region Ring Road, a major infrastructure project that will connect Busia to the Kenya-Tanzania border, unlocking new opportunities for trade and commerce.

Owalo explained that the road would not only improve transportation within Nyanza but also facilitate easier cross-border trade with neighboring countries, helping to integrate the region into wider regional economies.

“The Lake Region Ring Road will open up the region for trade and commerce. It will not only boost local businesses but also create new opportunities for trade with neighboring countries like Tanzania,” Owalo said.

Another significant project is the Koru-Soin Dam, which will help mitigate flooding in Nyando and provide much-needed irrigation during dry spells, bolstering food production in the region.

The dam is also expected to support last-mile water connectivity and enhance power generation through the Sondu Miriu electricity project.

“The Koru-Soin Dam will be a game-changer for Nyando. It will reduce flooding, support irrigation and provide water access to communities,” Owalo said.

“We are also looking at expanding electricity access in the region, which is critical for economic development.”

In addition, he said, the government is focused on revitalising key industries in the region, such as fish processing along Lake Victoria, sugar production, cotton farming, and mining in areas like Migori and Asembo.

Owalo also highlighted plans for a potato processing plant in Kuria and a soapstone factory in Kisii, both of which will provide new employment opportunities and help develop local industries.

He assured the people of Nyanza that under Ruto’s government, the region would see “tangible economic benefits” that will uplift its residents and ensure they are part of Kenya’s broader economic success.

“We are committed to seeing these projects through during the tenure of President Ruto. We are united in our pursuit of economic development for Nyanza, and we will not rest until these changes are realised,” Owalo said.
