Light aircraft with two on board crashes at Ikanga in Voi

Two people are believed to have died after a light aircraft crashed Saturday afternoon at Ikanga village in Voi, Taita Taveta.

Details of the crash are sketchy but images and video footage shared online showed the wreckage in flames.

Multiple eye witness accounts on social media said the aircraft burst into flames on impact. 

The aircraft had only two people on board, witnesses said, quoting local police.

It is the latest air accident involving a light aircraft in three months.

On January 10, a light aircraft crash-landed at Kwachocha area in Malindi along the Malindi-Mombasa highway.

Police in Kilifi county said there were three fatalities: two boda boda riders and a pillion passenger.

In a statement, the Kenya Civil Aviation Aauthority (KCAA) Director General Emile Arao confirmed that the fatalities were all on the ground when the aircraft came down along the Malindi-Mombasa highway.

“Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) wishes to confirm that an aircraft registration number SY-CDC, crashed 2km from Malindi airport at 2.52 pm," Arao said.

On January 31, two people were killed after a light aircraft that they were in crashed in Kedong Ranch, Naivasha.

The deceased were a man and woman who are said to be related.

They had taken off from Wilson Airport in Nairobi aboard a C185 aircraft and were headed for Mbaruk when the accident happened at about 2.15 pm.

It had taken off from Wilson Airport at about 1.19 pm before it crashed an hour later, officials said.

Area police boss Charles Mwai said bad weather and poor terrain in the area hampered rescue operations that were mounted later on.
