President William Ruto now says that his administration will provide Sh1 billion to Nairobi County to facilitate the construction of additional classrooms.
Speaking on Tuesday, when he toured St Teresa Girls Secondary in Mathare, Ruto said the funds would be in addition to what will be provided for the construction of classrooms under the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF).
He noted that this will help in ensuring the availability of the requisite facilities to provide quality education to the many children who go to informal schools.
“We have too many children in informal schools that do not have requisite facilities to make sure our children get requisite education. That is why we have agreed with your leaders that other than CDF, we have added Sh1 billion to build additional classes in Nairobi,” he said.
The President went on to say that he will support the construction of at least 10 new classrooms at St Teresa Girls Secondary and another five at St Teresa Primary school.
“We’ll construct 10 more classes at St Teresa GIRLS and five new classes at St Teresa primary to support the over 1,200 children who school there.”
Ruto further donated Sh5 million to help in equipping a new dormitory for girls.
He insisted that Nairobi must take its rightful place in terms of development and education by ensuring all children have access to quality education.
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, who was also present, vowed to ensure that the children continue to get an education without any distractions.
He noted that through the Dishi na County programme, he will ensure that the county is able to provide including Chapati in their meals.
He then requested President Ruto for support in acquiring a machine that can help the program make one million chapatis for the school feeding initiative.
The President is on the second day of his weeklong development tour of Nairobi.
He is scheduled to visit and commission projects across all the 17 Constituencies in Nairobi.
