The family of the late former IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati has thanked Kenyans for the support rendered during the time they were mourning their loved one.

The family in an appreciation message on Wednesday said they had received overwhelming support during the trying moment.

"We, the family of the late Wafula Wanyonyi Chebukati, extend our heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you for your overwhelming support during this challenging time. Your generosity, both in kind and financially, has been a beacon of light, and your outpouring love, kindness and prayers have brought us comfort," the family said in a post shared on X.

"Your unwavering presence has been our strength from the moment our beloved hero Wanyonyi transitioned to heaven on February 20, 2025, till the time we laid him to rest with a send off befitting of a legend at his Sabata farm on March 8, 2025. May God richly bless you and your families and may his peace always surround you. Asanteni sana."

Chebukati had been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for nearly a week, battling brain cancer before succumbing to cardiac arrest.

According to the family spokesperson Eric Nyongesa, Chebukati had been battling brain cancer, an ailment discovered in April 2023, a few months after he exited office.

Following this, he was flown to Germany, where he underwent a successful surgery to remove the tumor.

He would later spend some time in the country recovering until July of the same year when he returned to the country, he stated.

During this period until early 2024, he engaged in various duties in foreign countries, where he participated in electoral fora.

His wife, Mary, described him as a loving and devoted spouse who cherished her deeply.

His three children—a daughter and two sons—fondly remembered him as a hands-on father who, despite his demanding career, always prioritised family.
"He was fully present in our lives. Every Christmas, he made it a tradition to take us on holiday. Family was his anchor," they shared.
Chebukati was appointed as the IEBC chair in 2017 where he served six years and was awarded the Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart (EGH), Kenya's second highest civilian honour as he left office in 2023.
He was laid to rest on March 8, at his Sabata farm.
