Former President Rigathi Gachagua has alleged that President William Ruto gave him several offers to step down days before his impeachment.

Gachagua further claimed that the Head of State told him to his face that he could no longer work with him hence, he should step down honorably.

"He called me once when we disagreed, and he said, I cannot work with you. I would like you to resign, and if you don't, I will impeach you and he said, instead of you going home empty-handed, and since you assisted me, I would like you to go with your retirement package, and I will get you some money to get you started, like Sh1.5-2 billion, and I told him I am not interested. I am priceless," Gachagua said.

During his development tour, the Mountain President Ruto launched a defiant counteroffensive in his central Kenya tour—the backyard of his former deputy Gachagua.

Ruto claimed that his former deputy had demanded Sh10 billion to “organise” Mt Kenya politics, warning, “If my fate is one term, so be it.”

However, speaking during a TV interview on Monday, Gachagua alleged that more than once the President sent a senior officer in the government to convince him to resign in exchange for an attractive retirement package.

"He sent a very senior officer in government to come see me on the day the National Assembly resolved that I should be impeached, and he gave me his terms, and against my ethics because I don't record people, I recorded that conversation," Gachagua said.

Gachagua further alleged that, the following day, the President directed the officer to urge him to have a face-to-face conversation with him.

"He suggested I go to the State House and meet the president for the talks, and I refused. The officer further suggested that we meet at a city hotel, which I also refused. We met along State House Road in one of the safe houses run by the National Intelligence Service," Gachagua said.

"Again he gave me an offer, and I told him I will think about it because I didn't want to have a fight with him."

Gachagua claimed that the day he appeared before the Senate for his impeachment hearing, the officer was allegedly dispatched again by the president with another offer which he says he refused.
