Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu's Farmers Party has announced that it is exiting the ruling Kenya Kwanza Alliance over what it termed as dishonesty.

The party was founded by former KICC chairperson Irungu Nyakera but later acquired by Waititu.

In a letter to the chair of the Kenya Kwanza coalition and the Registrar of Political Parties, the party said its National Executive Committee (NEC) met and unanimously resolved to part ways with Kenya Kwanza, effective immediately.

“Therefore, Farmers Party hereby issues a thirty (30) day notice of intention to exit the Kenya Kwanza Coalition, pursuant to Clause 8 (Termination) of the Coalition Agreement,” the letter reads in part.

The party said it entered the coalition in good faith and with a shared vision, but with time, they have come to notice a trend of 'dishonesty and disregard for the Constitution'.

“However, it is with deep regret that we note a consistent pattern of dishonesty, political infidelity, and outright disregard for both the Constitution of Kenya (2010) and the spirit of our Coalition Agreement.

“The recent unilateral signing of a Broad-Based Government Agreement between the Kenya Kwanza Coalition and the ODM Party without consultation or involvement of the Kenya Kwanza constituent parties such as ours is the final confirmation of the political conmanship that has come to define the coalition.”

“This move not only violates the trust upon which our coalition was founded, but also undermines the principles of inclusivity, transparency, and mutual respect.”

The intention to exit comes a few days after President William Ruto dismissed Nyakera from the position as chairperson of the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).

He was then replaced by Samuel Waweru.

In the recent past, Nyakera, despite serving the Kenya Kwanza administration had become a critic of some of the activities of the Kenya Kwanza administration.

The party entered into a pre-election alliance with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in March 2022.

The party was one of the signatories of the One Kenya Alliance (OKA) deal that was sealed on March 11, 2022, by Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper), Martha Karua (Narc-Kenya), Gideon Moi (Kanu) and Cyrus Jirongo (NDP). OKA would later on join Azimio la Umoja.
