A section of Meru leaders have faulted the government for alleged inaction, despite increased insecurity in the county.

Speaking to the media at Parliament Buildings on Tuesday, the leaders led by Buuri MP Mugambi Rindikiri said they want to see action from the government.

Rindikiri said security agencies should visit Meru County to get to know what is happening on the ground and the suffering people are going through.

He insisted that the people need protection and the government must step in.

“Every day, the government says it will act, and we members of Parliament are saying this is the time for the government to work by protecting the people of Meru,” the Buuri MP said.

He added that going forward, Meru leaders will no longer take part in the security meetings sanctioned by the government over the situation in the county.

Rindikiri said all they want as leaders is to see arrests of perpetrators, surrender of illegal guns and stolen cattle returned.

“We are not going to listen to stories anymore, we want the government to tell us whether they will work for us or not.

“We are not going for any security meetings again. We want to see people on the ground arrested, guns returned, our cattle returned, and they can take their meetings wherever they want,” he added.

Meru has, for a long time, had security challenges, including banditry and cattle rustling, which have in some instances, led to deaths.

The acts, according to the leaders are carried out by individuals from neighbouring counties of Laikipia and Samburu.

Several security meetings have been held to end tension between the affected counties, but they have still not yielded good results.

Last year, the government promised to deploy more police reservists to ensure security in the affected areas.
