There were low key activities to mark 26 years since terrorists bombed the US embassy in Nairobi killing more than 200 people.

Security operations were enhanced across the country and in particular critical infrastructure as part of efforts to tame any planned attack.

Few visitors flocked to the memorial park in Nairobi.

America sent US Department of State Under Secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy and Human Rights Uzra Zeya, to join Kenyans in marking the event.

She visited the site amid security and laid wreath to mark the day.

Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli said security agents had enhanced operations in many parts of the country to address any form of threats.

“Our teams are all over following and thwarting many plans. We continue to urge all to cooperate with agencies in the fight against terrorism and other forms of crime,” he said.

He cited Monday August 5 where multi-agency teams conducted raids targeting al Shabaab positions in Mandera, Wajir and Garissa counties.

At the borders of Mandera and Wajir counties, an intelligence led operation was conducted on suspected al Shabaab hideouts spread across Iresqinto, Kutayu and Boji areas.

Subsequently, he said, several items dug and hidden into the ground were retrieved.

Among the items found were AK47 and PKM ammunitions, medical equipment, drugs and several jerricans filled with water.

In Garissa county, a joint security team came into contact with about five suspected al Shabaab militants in Adan Santur.

The team was responding to distress calls from locals whose camels were being forcibly confiscated by the terrorists.

Two camels were recovered and returned to their owners who lauded the security forces for their quick response.

The militants, some of them injured, made a narrow escape and crossed the border into Somalia on a bullet riddled white Toyota Probox vehicle.

The US embassy bombings occurred on August 7, 1998.

More than 200 people were killed in nearly simultaneous truck bomb explosions in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam where the USs embassies were.
